Musings: To ESY or (Not) To ESY

Is ESY The Answer?
By The Artsy SLP

At one time or another, pretty much everyone that works in Special Ed in the school system has contemplated ESY. For SLPs, OTs, and PTs if you want to work “summer school” then ESY is the only option. I had put off ESY for many years, but one summer, I decided to give it a try. I still don’t know what to make of it; however, I decided to give it another try this summer. It’s chaotic, hectic, and very hands-on. I always enjoy working with the students. However, the chaotic hectic schedule took some getting used to. I experienced even more chaos than during the regular school year. Now that’s hectic! By the time I got adjusted and finally got into the swing of things, then it was over.

So that makes me wonder… Is ESY the answer? Or are there other ways our children in Special Ed can be enriched during the summer? Whether working ESY or just considering it, I would love to hear your feedback!
