Hello! I’m Marisa and I’m here to provide you with support as the mom of an autistic child with the insight as a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). As a parent, I know first hand about the challenges, I understand the feelings of isolation, and how others don’t truly understand what you are going through.
As an SLP with over 20 years of experience, I provide a very unique perspective as both a parent and an SLP. I empathize with the challenges you may face and I know about the strategies that will help your child the most.
I went into the field of Speech Language Pathology because I wanted to make a difference. However, when my son was diagnosed with autism, I started to view things in a whole new way. I began researching strategies, tips, and interventions to help him. Around that time, I also opened my online TPT Store: The Artsy SLP which has since grown into a Top 5% global brand. I started on that journey because I had difficulty finding the right materials to use with my son. Therefore, I started creating my own. I was able to find my passion to help my son and provide resources for fellow educators at the same time.
My son is the heart of everything I do and I write about the time he saved me during a medical emergency in My Autistic Son Saved My Life.
Most recently, I was featured on the top 1.5% podcast Embracing Autism, where I share my expertise on AAC and my experience as an SLP Autism Mom.
I’ve worked in a variety of settings that include Early Childhood Intervention, Home Health with adults, and in the school system. I currently work in the high school setting. My passion is helping others and providing them with a voice.
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and my Master’s Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences. I’m certified with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) with a Certificate of Clinical Competence. I also hold a teacher license and state license certification.
Although my son is in elementary school, my work with students at the secondary level allows me to see the “big picture.” I’m able to see first hand how the decisions that you make today impact a child in the future. So let’s navigate neurodiversity together, from childhood to adulthood.
