What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication – essentially any method that helps someone communicate beyond spoken words. This includes everything from simple picture cards, visual schedules, low tech devices, to dynamic screen communication devices. If you’re new to AAC or want to understand it better, I wrote a blog post on the 5 Common AAC Myths for a deeper dive. Many parents may believe that AAC will decrease speech, but I know from personal experience, it actually INCREASES speech and social interactions!

RELATED: 5 Common Myths About AAC

Why AAC?

Every child deserves to express their basic wants and needs – hungry, tired, help – and even have the ability to make comments. Without a way to communicate these essentials, children become frustrated, parents feel lost, and outings turn into battles. AAC gives your child a voice for their most important messages, reducing meltdowns and creating successful social interactions for the entire family.

There is nothing worse than not knowing what your child wants! I remember feeling helpless as my son was having a meltdown and pointing; wondering what he wanted and not knowing how to help him. Honestly, sometimes I wanted to have a meltdown right along with him!

You see, my son has autism and was nonverbal until age 5. I lived this life. Every. Single. Day. As both a speech-language pathologist and an autism mom, I understood AAC from a professional perspective – but I was learning what it meant to actually live it, to be there in those crucial moments.

It was due to early intervention and AAC that helped him communicate – now he talks without using a device. My son’s experience may not mirror your own, but I hope to provide you with inspiration. I see you. I understand you, and I know what it feels like to wonder, ‘Will my child ever talk?'”

RELATED: 10 Tips To Encourage AAC

The Moment That Changed Everything

When my son was three, I’ll never forget the day at the museum when he started getting antsy. Instead of scrambling for his device, scrolling through the pages, and trying to guess what he needed, I showed him the simple communication card I’d created. He immediately pointed to “ready to go.”

I asked, “Are you tired?” and he pointed to “yes.”

Instead of rushing to leave before a meltdown started, I looked him in the eye and said, “I know you’re tired. Let’s just finish this activity and we can go.”

And you know what? He settled down. No meltdown. No battle. He was at peace – not because I gave him what he wanted immediately, but because he had been heard and acknowledged. He was only three years old, but he understood that his feelings mattered. That moment still gives me chills because it proved something powerful: quick communication is about being seen as a human being with valid feelings.

That’s the power of quick communication in action! 💛

What Inspired AAC On-The-Go

AAC On-The-Go isn’t meant to replace your child’s main communication system. It’s designed to complement it with lightning-fast access to the words that matter most during community outings – museums, zoos, restaurants, sporting events, science centers. And let’s keep it real…the grocery store!

RELATED: Grab Your AAC On-The-Go FREEBIE

These are places where sensory overload is most likely to occur and your child needs quick solutions to be heard. This is especially helpful when you’re managing other children or navigating large group dynamics where you need immediate communication, not lengthy device searches.

AAC On-The-Go sets the foundation for basic needs, then the comprehensive device can dive deeper into conversation, once your child’s immediate needs are met.

My simple tool gives you instant communication for those urgent moments when your child needs to tell you:

I am hungry

I am thirsty

It is too loud

I feel sick

I need my sensory toy

I am ready to go

Yes/No

How To Use AAC On-The-Go

Getting started is simple: choose between the vertical or horizontal style (both 8.5 x 5.5 inches), cut it out, and laminate for durability. The compact size makes it easy to toss in your purse, backpack, or sling bag for quick access when you’re out in the community.

RELATED: Grab Your AAC On-The-Go FREEBIE

When your child needs to communicate something urgent, simply show them the card and let them point to what they need. You’ll be able to attend to their needs quickly and avoid meltdowns before they start.

BONUS: I’ve included a Canva template link so you can design your own version with pictures that work specifically for your child!

AAC On-The-Go gives your child a way to communicate their most urgent needs quickly, preventing frustration and creating successful experiences for your whole family.

Remember, it’s not about giving them everything they want immediately – it’s about acknowledging that their feelings matter.

AAC Simon Says

Activity: Play a modified version of Simon Says. Let the students choose commands for the other kids in class to follow. Choose simple commands like jump, clap, or sit. Have a picture card with Simon Says that the student can hold up, along with their command. Also, have Simon Says programmed into student devices.

Goal: Enhance comprehension skills and following directions while incorporating AAC into fun, active play.

Extension: Allow students to take turns being “Simon” and giving instructions with their AAC device.

AAC Charades

Activity: Have a list ahead of time of the words the students have to act out. Already have those words included on picture cards or programmed in student devices. Then when students are acting out the word, students using AAC will be able to hold up a picture card with their answer or use their device. Students using AAC may also take a turn acting out the word.

Goal: Encourage student engagement and creative thinking skills. Also, increase student confidence while promoting social skills.

Extension: Adapt the difficulty level by adding common phrases, instead of just using words.

AAC Opinion Poll

Activity: Conduct an “opinion poll” where students share their thoughts about topics, such as, their favorite foods, hobbies, or activities. Students using AAC may hold up symbol cards of yes/no to indicate if they agree or disagree with the other students. Find out student preferences ahead of time to have the cards or devices ready for students to share their thoughts. Keep a tally of the responses and then discuss the results.

Goal: Provide students with an opportunity to express their opinions using AAC.

Extension: Use this activity for group decision-making, like voting on class activities or projects.

AAC Word of the Day

Activity: Have a vocabulary word of the day. Students using AAC may use their devices to create sentences with the vocabulary word. This helps the students practice using the word and it reinforce its meaning.

Goal: Build vocabulary, increase comprehension skills, and encourage regular AAC use.

Extension: Create a “Word Wall” where the vocabulary words are displayed for students to practice during the day.

AAC Weather Report

Activity: Have students create a “weather report” using picture cards or their AAC devices. Students describe the current weather and share how the weather makes them feel. Have each student take turns being a “weather reporter” so they can report the weather.

Goal: Encourage language skills, social skills, and practice daily communication about daily events.

Extension: After the students come in from recess, have them make a prediction about the weather for the next day or the rest of the week. Then keep tally of the students that make correct predictions.

AAC Board Games

Activity: Modify traditional board games like Candyland or Connect Four by including AAC. Students use picture boards or AAC devices to ask whose turn it is, what color they want, or to say “I win.”

Goal: Make communication part of the fun while reinforcing language and social skills.

Extension: Create a custom AAC-friendly board game where players must use their devices to move forward or answer questions.

AAC Bingo

Activity: Create a Bingo board filled with commonly used AAC symbols or words.
Storytelling with AAC

Activity: Read a story and have students use their AAC devices or picture cards to answer questions.
AAC Song Time

Activity: Sing familiar songs with repetitive lyrics–like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star–and use AAC to join in. Include symbols for key words so students can participate by holding up a picture or using their devices. By using a song with repetitive lyrics, the students will be able to anticipate which words are coming next.

Goal: Encourage participation and interaction through music, while building vocabulary.

Extension: Let students choose their favorite songs and use AAC to express their song preferences.

AAC Art Project

Activity: Students create an art project by drawing, painting, or coloring. Then students discuss their artwork using picture cards or their AAC devices. Display the art around the classroom to encourage more group discussions.

Goal: Promote creativity, self-expression, and social skills while integrating AAC.

Extension: Have the students make comments on the artwork and share what they like.
RELATED: Increasing AAC Awareness

Conclusion

By integrating these activities into your classroom, you’ll help promote awareness, inclusivity, and understanding of AAC. Engaging in random acts of kindness is often seen as a way to promote empathy, compassion, and a sense of community.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL has five major components that include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Teaching SEL in the classroom has a positive impact on children and adults. It encourages student achievement, self-awareness, and positive behaviors in and outside of the classroom. Students that participated in the SEL curriculum saw an increase in their academics, grades, and had better attendance.

How Does Kindness Impact SEL?

Kindness is an important part of the SEL curriculum and is a skill that can be taught like many others. Teaching kindness is essential for children to learn how to establish and maintain healthy relationships. As well as, encourage children at a young age to have empathy, compassion, and understanding towards others.

Unfortunately, many children may experience bullying in school. Bullying can be subtle, such as, spreading rumors or intentionally excluding someone from a group. It can also be overt, such as, teasing or physically attacking someone.

For tips on teaching social emotional learning, read my blog post on 5 Simple Tips To Teach Feelings and Emotions.

What is bullying?

Bullying is an aggressive type of behavior where a person or group of people repeatedly cause someone personal injury, pain, or discomfort.

Who is at risk for bullying?

Any child is susceptible to bullying. However, children that are bullied are often have certain characteristics:

Different from their peers: Anything that makes kids different from typical peers at the school could make them a target for bullying. This includes: being new to the school, being a different culture/religion, not dressing like the other kids, being overweight, wearing glasses, etc.

Vulnerability: Some children are less likely to defend themselves, stand up to others, or have friends back them up. They may be viewed as vulnerable, weak, and as an easy target. Also kids that are sensitive and lack self-confidence may be more susceptible to bullying.

Social Status: Kids that belong to a different social group from typical peers could be an easy target. Also children that are perceived as less popular or have fewer friends are also more likely to be bullied.

Why some children bully others

Many factors impact why a child bullies another child. However, children that bully others often:

Want to maintain their social power: Some children feel pressure to adhere to the social norm and are easily influenced by peer pressure. Therefore, anyone who is different could be viewed an easy target. Kids may also bully others to hold onto their social status and to make themselves look better than others.

Desire to fit in with others: The need to fit in and be like others is common with most children. However, some kids may feel that in order to maintain a certain status, they have to put others down. When in the group setting, some students bully others to feel good about themselves; despite the cost of how it affects their peers.

Seek to control others: Some kids feel the need to control the behavior of their peers. They seek control to disguise feelings of inadequacy or feelings of insecurity about themselves. These children may feel helpless at home or in other aspects of their lives. Therefore, they may feel that bullying others will show the group that they are in charge and make them feel better about themselves.

6 Ways to Deal with Bullying

Understand the definition of a bully. Children need to know what a bully is and understand if they may be the victim of bullying. It is helpful to talk with your child about the definition of bullying and signs to look for at school.

Open the lines of communication. Encourage kids to talk with a trusted adult: parent, teacher, or counselor if they feel they are being bullied. Also, if a child witnesses bullying they should report it to a trusted adult. Ignoring the situation will not make it go away, it may only get worse.

Learn to express feelings openly. Children that are the victim of bullying may find it difficult to talk about their experience. Talk with your child about their emotions and let them know that their feelings are important. Create a safe space and environment at home to let your child know that you are there for them. For more tips on teaching children resilience, read my post on Positive Self Esteem Activities for Children.

Build self-esteem and resilience. Involve kids in activities that they may enjoy: join a sports team, karate, dance, gymnastics, take music lessons, join an art club, or other hobbies that foster self-esteem. When kids become involved in activities where they experience success, it helps them build resilience. This may also help your child overcome hardship and be better equipped to adapt to challenging situations.
Model kindness and respect. Kids often observe their parents and how they handle different life events. Watch how you respond to challenging situation by modeling the appropriate way to respond. Model kindness by giving compliments, staying positive, saying please/thank you, letting others go first, or volunteering your time. Most importantly, demonstrate to your child that everyone should be treated equally.

Stand up for others. Encourage your child to be kind to those that are bullied and let them know they are not alone. In the children’s book Braiding: Crowns of Friendship by author Christine Aldrich, she writes about how children can stand up to bullying and work together. Ms. Aldrich is the director of Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) at Compton College. More importantly, assure your child that the bullying is not their fault and that you support them. Encourage your child to talk with you about any issues that may arise. If you feel that bullying is impacting your child’s mental health, then you may want to seek additional services through the school counselor, pediatrician, psychiatrist, or other mental health professionals.

As a parent, you want to encourage your kids to eat healthy. If your child has autism, then it can be even more of a challenge to introduce fruits and vegetables.

Before starting your kids on the healthy track, it’s helpful to understand why your child may be a picky eater. As a parent of a child with autism, I know the importance of wanting your child to eat healthy. Discover the science to why some kids are such picky eaters. Grab my Feelings and Emotions Freebie for more autism related activities.

The Science Behind Picky Eaters

Why is my autistic child so picky with food?

The most common reason is sensory processing. Children with autism are very particular when it comes to the texture and consistency of food. They may even develop aversions based on how a food visually looks and even how a food smells. Kids on the spectrum are also more prone to make associations. If they eat one green vegetable and they don’t like it, thus all green foods are bad.

What to do if my autistic child won’t eat vegetables?

Your child may have difficulty processing the food texture or food consistency. If children have an issue with the texture or consistency of a food, then they may not want to eat it. This is why so many kids on the spectrum are “picky eaters.”

Texture – Describes the sense of how the food/liquid feels when you eat it. Textures include solid, rough, smooth, or creamy.

Solids

Regular – Harder to chew (raw vegetables, nuts/seeds, or crunchy foods)

Soft – Smooth texture (ice cream, smoothies, or apple sauce)

Minced or Moist – Soft texture (mashed potatoes or mashed bananas)

Puree – Without lumps and easier to chew (yogurt or pureed foods)

Mechanical Soft – Soft texture (eggs, deli meats, or breads)

Consistency – Describes the thickness and textures of food/liquid. Certain food textures are easier to chew and liquids are easier to digest.

Liquids

Thin – Regular liquid that runs quickly (water or tea)

Nectar – Thicker liquid that pours easily (creamy soups, tomato juice, or fruit nectar)

Honey – Thicker liquid (yogurt or honey)

Pudding – Liquids that keep their shape (jello or pudding)

Overall, your child’s aversion to certain types of food may have more to do with their sensory needs than the taste of the food. They may have a texture aversion instead.

How To Get Your Child To Eat Healthy

1. Vegetables of a Different Color

Serve vegetables that are orange, yellow, red, or white. Children are quick to form associations, especially kids on the spectrum. For example, children may start to identify all vegetables or healthy foods as being green. Therefore, it is helpful to switch things up by serving vegetables of a different color.

Examples include:

Sweet Potatoes

Tomatoes

2. Experiment with Different Textures

Fix fruits and vegetables with a different texture. Have your child try diced, riced, mashed, or linguini noodle vegetables. Also consider applesauce, fruit cups, or fruit-veggie squeeze (in a puree). I prefer to buy the frozen riced or mashed vegetables that are already prepared. Then try spooning it onto your child’s plate along with their favorite foods.

One of my favorites:

3. Add Fruits and Vegetables To Preferred Foods

Become creative by adding vegetables to your child’s preferred foods. You can hide vegetables within your child’s meal.

Introduce vegetables in a different form. Provide healthy snacks that include veggies. Be sure to check the labels to choose the healthiest options.

5. Include Fruits and Veggies in Smoothies

Smoothies are a favorite for many kids due to their sweet flavor and smooth consistency. Add leafy green vegetables like kale or spinach and other vegetables like carrots or zucchini. I’ve had the best results with adding kale to my smoothies. This is a mild leafy green vegetable and is not detected in the smoothie. I find some of the other vegetables, such as spinach, tend to have more of a twang that you can detect.

Smoothie Tips

You can buy kale fresh and cut it up. You could also buy fresh kale in a bag already cut and ready to use. After I wash my kale, I put it in a zip-lock plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Then it’s ready to go when I need it. I measure 1/4 Cup of kale in my smoothies. You can always use more, but I find that’s the perfect amount. When I use more than that, it takes over the taste of the fruit.

Frozen Fruits and Vegetables

I find that smoothies taste better when the fruits and vegetables are frozen. You can cut up the fruit and freeze it. You could also buy fruit that is already frozen and ready for smoothies. I use 1 Cup of fruit in my smoothie. Bonus Tip: Although I do frequently use fresh bananas in my smoothies. It gives the smoothies a nice texture and adds flavor. I usually use 1 cut up banana.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a way for an individual to communicate by using alternative methods. Read on to learn about the benefits of AAC and debunk some of its common myths.

What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes pictures, communication books, signs, gestures, symbol boards, speech generated devices, or a combination of these modalities.

Who uses AAC?

People of all ages benefit from the use of a communication device. In this blog post, I will discuss AAC as it relates to children. All behaviors are communication based. I believe that providing children with a voice and a way for them to express their thoughts is a way to decrease their frustration.
RELATED: AAC Resource On-The-Go FREEBIE

Personal Story

Before reading the common myths about AAC, I’d like to share my personal story. My son has autism and I was able to use my expertise as a Speech Language Pathologist and knowledge of AAC to help him communicate. Starting at age two, I introduced an iPad with an AAC app. My son was able to express his thoughts, ideas, love, opinions, and so much more. I saw a significant decrease in his overall frustration when he was able to communicate. I learned from my son that children just want to be acknowledged.

I understand the total isolation that you feel as a parent when you start to wonder… Will my child ever talk? I know what it feels like to watch helplessly as your child becomes frustrated or has a meltdown because they are unable to communicate how they feel.

Now after early interventions (and working with him at home), my son is able to communicate without using a device. It is important to remember that everyone’s journey with AAC is unique and my experience may not mirror your own. It is also important to consult with your chid’s pediatrician if you have concerns. However, I’d like this to be a message of hope to other parents going through the same thing. Know that things will get better. The ultimate goal, is to provide a way for your child to communicate so that they do not become frustrated.

RELATED: Embracing Autism Podcast Interview on AAC🎙️
Want more practical tips on AAC?

AAC allows children to express themselves.

Common Myths About AAC

1. AAC will stop my child from talking.

AAC does NOT prevent your child from talking or using their words. This is a very common misconception. Instead, it is a way for children to express their thoughts, wants, and needs. In fact, AAC often increases your child’s verbalizations. Many parents worry that using AAC will discourage their child from talking. However, AAC teaches children that their words are valuable and have meaning. Therefore, it encourages them to want to communicate.

2. AAC will delay my child’s language development.

In fact, AAC will actually increase your child’s language skills. They work on their receptive language by requesting and their expressive language by stating their wants/needs. Especially with speech generated devices, it’s a good idea to have your child make simple sentences when requesting items. For example, instead of selecting “Cookies,” encourage your child to select “I want cookies” or “More cookies please.” By using this strategy, when a child starts to verbalize, it increases their utterances. It encourages them to use phrases, simple sentences, and helps foster their language development.
RELATED: AAC On The Go for Quick Communication

3. Only nonverbal children use AAC.

AAC is not just for children that are completely nonverbal. A very common misconception is that if a child is “talking” then they don’t need AAC. However, it they aren’t effectively communicating, this could lead to communication breakdowns and lots of frustration. AAC can be used with all children that are unable to effectively communicate their needs. Even if a child has a few words or rote phrases, they still benefit greatly from using alternative communication. If your child is unable to state their wants/needs, say how they feel, tell you if they are sick, et cetera; then AAC helps them communicate.

4. I know what my child wants; they don’t need AAC.

As parents, we become great at being intuitive and anticipating our child’s needs. We’ve been anticipating their needs since the day they were born. However, it’s also equally as important to give your child a voice. AAC helps your child make their own choices, decisions, and to be more independent. Also, keep in mind that your child is not with you all of the time. AAC helps your child communicate in a variety of settings outside of the home.
RELATED: 10 Engaging AAC Activities To Boost Communication

5. AAC is a last resort to intervention.

AAC is not something to try when all else fails. It is actually one of the first steps when a child is delayed with their speech and language skills. It teaches children how to communicate, express themselves, and it increases positive social interactions. In fact, AAC provides your child with the ability to start communicating right away. It will increase your child’s self-esteem and help improve their communication skills overall.

Conclusion

I’m very passionate about AAC and I believe that it provides children with a voice. Studies show that using AAC helps with language development, increasing social skills, and building positive self-esteem. It is important to remember that children just want to be acknowledged and they want to be heard. When AAC is provided at an early age, it helps children develop their overall language skills. Providing children with a voice helps decrease their frustration and it fosters independence.
Potty training a child on the spectrum requires patience, time, and dedication. The first step is realizing that the process will be different. As a parent of a child with autism, I know how challenging it can be. Read on to learn tips to use during your potty training journey.

How do you potty train an autistic child?

Typically, it does take a little longer and there are unique challenges with toilet training a child on the spectrum. Before getting started, read my post 7 Tips On How Autism Impacts Toilet Training. This post outlines how sensory processing, rigidity with routine, and communication impact the potty training process.

At what age should a child with autism be toilet trained?

There is no typical age. Before getting started, make sure that your child is not having any urological problems that may impact toilet training. Consult with your pediatrician if you observe your child in discomfort when using the bathroom, can’t hold their urine, have fewer than two bowel movements or weak, or they are having difficulties going to the bathroom. Below I address the signs to look for to determine if your child is ready to be potty trained.
RELATED: Autism AAC On-The-Go FREEBIE

Parent’s Guide to Toilet Training Children with Autism

1) Have Patience

Think of potty training as a marathon, not as a race. Children with autism have unique sensory needs and rigidity with routine that can impact the potty training process. Typically, kids on the spectrum meet some of their developmental milestones at a different pace. Try not to focus on your child’s age or think they should be potty trained by a certain time. Give yourself grace and realize that it will take time. Instead, focus on your child’s strengths, celebrate their accomplishments, and know that they will get there.
RELATED: Understanding Stimming Behaviors in Autism

2) Make sure your child is truly ready

Trying to potty train your autistic child before they are ready will not be successful. In fact, the process may take even longer if you start too soon. I made this mistake. After several frustrating attempts, I finally realized that my son just wasn’t ready. So I stopped the process and decided to try when he was older. That is when I had success.

Signs that an autistic child is ready to be potty trained:

Showing an interest in the toilet, sitting on it, or watching an adult use it

Taking an adult to the bathroom to get a clean diaper or pull-up

Having a dry diaper for a longer period of time

Waking up dry from a nap

Showing discomfort when being soiled and wanting to be charged

3) Plan Ahead of Time

Following these steps and preparing ahead of time will help facilitate the potty training process.

Potty seat and step ladder–I personally prefer the potty seat that sits on top of the regular toilet. A potty chair is also an option. However, the potty chair is just another transition that your child will have to face; transitioning from the potty chair to the toilet. That is why I prefer the potty seat because your child is already using the toilet. You can even buy a potty chair that also has the capability to take the seat off to place on the toilet.

Pull-ups or underwear in your child’s size–Buy pull-ups or underwear with your child’s favorite cartoons to help motivate them. When trying to decide whether to use pull-ups or underwear, go to #4 Potty Training Process.

Timer–To set up a familiar routine and to track how long your child should sit on the toilet.

Daily Log–Keep track of when your child uses the potty, if they urinate or have a bowel movement, when they have an accident, how many times you attempt the toilet, and any other behavioral notes.

Sticker Chart –Have your child can put a sticker every time they attempt the potty. This motivates them to keep trying. I posted my son’s sticker chart on the bathroom door.

Reinforcers–I highly recommend having reinforcers that you only use when the child is in the bathroom. This will help motivate them to want to go to the potty. I made a kit of sensory items just for the bathroom. My son loves play-doh. So I kept playdoh in the kit and he only got to use it when he went to the bathroom. Other items could include: bubbles, squishy ball, fidget spinner, or popit. Then your child will look forward to going to the bathroom to use that sensory item. I have found that if my son had access to it at other times, then it was not as motivating.

Rewards–I also had items ready for when my son actually used the potty. I got some mints, showed him the mints, and let him know that when he used the potty, he would get to eat one. I used this as another reinforcer to show that when he had success on the potty, then he would get the reward. As soon as he used the potty, he was excited to have his mints. I recommend using a highly motivating reward that your child does not have access to at any other time.

Children’s Books and Videos on Using the Potty–This will also help prepare your child for starting the potty training process. Reading to your child about the toilet and watching videos will help show them what to do and what is expected.

Social Story and Visual Schedule–Using a social story will also show your child what is expected. It will also reassure them that it is okay to use the toilet and that you are transitioning to something new. Having a visual schedule will help walk your child through the different steps. You can use pictures or photos. Another option is to put pictures on your child’s ipad to show them what to expect.
RELATED: 10 Engaging AAC Activities to Boost Communication

4) Potty Training Process

This phase will take structure, consistency, and patience. Once you have prepared ahead of time, it’s time to start the process. It’s helpful to pick a starting date when your child will have extra time; such as during the summer or during winter break. Next, it’s important to pick one bathroom to concentrate your efforts. Pick the bathroom that your child feels the most comfortable and is easy to get to.
RELATED: 6 Sensory Strategies for Autism

Then follow these guidelines:

Form a new routine–Go to the bathroom every 30 minutes for the first 2 days. After the first 2 days, take your child to the bathroom every hour. If your child is dry when they go to the bathroom, praise them for keeping their underwear dry.

Pull-ups vs. underwear–There is always a debate on whether to use pull-ups or underwear; even with neurotypical children. I have tried both. However, due to sensory issues with autism, I recommend using pull-ups. Having “soiled” underwear may feel uncomfortable for a neurotypical child, but may not have the same impact on a child with autism. Especially if your child is hypo-sensitive –they may have reduced sensitivity to soiled underwear. If your child has an accident, it is important not to get upset. Keep a neutral tone and remind them that we go potty in the toilet.

Increase liquid intake–Encourage your child to drink fluids; especially water and to eat fruit. After the first week, you can slowly decrease their fluid intake.

Sit on the toilet for five minutes– Set the timer. Your child can play with their reinforcers while sitting on the potty. This will help keep them entertained. It’s important not to have your child sit on the toilet for a long time because they may become frustrated. If your child indicates that they have to go, then have them sit longer. Remember, it is not uncommon for your child to soil themselves, even after sitting on the toilet. Be patient.

Positive Reinforcement: Sticker Chart – Have your child put down a sticker every time they attempt to go potty. Be sure to choose items, objects, or characters that are motivating. It is important to reward your child for every attempt to boost their self-esteem. Then upgrade to two stickers, different stickers, etc. if they actually use the potty. It is important that your child feels success, even if they don’t actually use the potty.

Keep a Daily Log– Take notes and keep track of the following:

When your child uses the potty

When they have an accident

What type of accident

If they urinate or have a bowel movement

The number of attempts at using the toilet

Other behavioral notes: time of day, frequency, etc.

Remember to look for patterns. Most children are consistent with they time of day they need to use the bathroom.
RELATED: AAC On The Go for Quick Communication

Conclusion

Potty training an autistic child may take a little longer. Try not to get discouraged by comparing your child to others. I understand how you feel and I’ve been there. Hopefully by following these guidelines, it will make your journey a little smoother. Overall, remember that patience and consistency are the key.

RELATED: Embracing Autism Podcast Interview on AAC🎙️
Want more practical tips on AAC?
Many parents wonder when to start toilet training their child with autism. Potty training a typical child can be difficult. However, it can be even more challenging with children on the spectrum. Read on to learn from my personal experience how autism can impact the toilet training process.

Common Questions

At what age should an autistic child be potty trained?

Often times, children with autism are potty trained at a later age than their typical peers. A general goal is to aim to have your child toilet trained before starting school. However, even if your child isn’t toilet trained before school, you can continue to use these strategies.

RELATED: Autism AAC On-The-Go FREEBIE

Is it difficult to potty train an autistic child?

It can be more challenging due to sensory processing issues, communication needs, and familiarizing a new routine. In this blog, you will learn about how autism often impacts the potty training process. Most children with autism can be potty trained, it just takes a little longer.

Understanding Toilet Training and Your Child with Autism

Toss out everything you’ve learned about toilet training a typical child.

As the parent of a child with autism, this is something I wish I had known ahead of time. I can’t tell you how much well intended advice I received on how to potty train a child. However, many times the advice used for typically developing children does not apply to children with autism. I also wish I had known this because I spent so much time wondering and worrying about why the strategies weren’t working. Also, ignore everything you’ve heard about a child being potty trained in a few days or over a weekend. This will only set you up to feel like you are doing something wrong as a parent. Your child will get there, just know that it may take a little extra time.

RELATED: Potty Training Tips for Autism.

Helpful Tips for Understanding Potty Training a Child with Autism.

There are many factors that can delay children with autism learning how to use the toilet independently. I have compiled a list of things that may impact your child:

Sensory Processing

Being less sensitive to being wet, sticky, cold, and the other sensations associated with potty training. For a typical child, they will not like these sensations and this may encourage them to use the potty. However, for a child with autism, it may not bother them in the same way if they soil their clothes. Therefore, the strategy of putting the child in underwear instead of pull-ups so that they can “feel” that sensation on their skin may not be as successful. However, putting your child in underwear is still a good idea to get them used to the routine of using the bathroom. Sometimes it’s helpful to take your child to the restroom even after they have an accident and emphasis this is where they go to the bathroom. Also, keeping up with a regular schedule of going to the restroom will also help with developing the routine of using the potty.

Communication

Struggles with overall communication skills is common. Many autistic children are nonverbal or lack the tools to effectively communicate their wants/needs. It may be helpful to have picture cards with a picture of the bathroom. Therefore, your child is able to communicate if they need to go. The picture cards can also be used on a visual schedule to set up a routine of going to the bathroom. Even if a child is not requesting on their own to go to the bathroom, it is helpful if you show them the picture every time you take them to the restroom. Your child may benefit from some type of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) to help them communicate.

RELATED: 5 Common Myths About AAC.

Peer Pressure

Lacking the social awareness of what other children are doing. Many children on the spectrum are not motivated by what their peers are doing. For a typical child, they may not want to stand out or be different. So this can be helpful in the potty training process. However, an autistic child is often introverted and focused on their own interests. It simply may not bother them if their friends are using the potty and they’re not. It can be helpful to read Children’s books, sing songs, and watch videos to help familiarize them with the process.

Rigidity with Routine

Being rigid with a routine and wanting things to stay the same. Believe it or not, a child using the bathroom in a pull-up or diaper is all part of a routine that is familiar to them. Therefore, using the potty is a deviation from their normal routine. It is something different from what they are used to. Getting your child to understand that they can use the bathroom in the toilet instead of their pull-up is the first challenge. Again, consistency is the key. Putting your child on a schedule of going to the bathroom, even if they don’t have to go, will help them start to form a new routine.

Associations

Making associations is very common for autistic children. Did your child experience anything unexpected while trying to use the potty? Or were they startled while trying to use the bathroom? This may include: a sibling walking in on them, toilet flushing automatically, hearing a loud sound, being left alone to answer a phone call, and numerous other scenarios that may catch your child off guard.

If your autistic child has a negative experience while using the bathroom, they may start to associate that feeling with the potty training process. They may not understand that whatever unexpected event happened that one time, won’t happen every time they go to the bathroom.

Taking your child to the bathroom consistently will help them form a new positive association. If your child won’t go into the bathroom based on a negative experience, then trying these techniques may help. Reading Childrens books about going to the bathroom and social stories are helpful. A social story could focus on reminding your child that they are safe in the bathroom and highlighting the things to expect ahead of time.

Sensitivity to Sounds

Many autistic children do not like loud noises and will often cover their ears if they hear something loud. This ties in with how a child with autism makes associations and could play a major role in their struggle with potty training. When the toilet flushes, this creates a loud sound. Your child may also be sensitive to the sound of running water in the sink. Be cognizant of how your child responds to these sounds.

Public restrooms, at school or in the community, often present a unique set of challenges. Keep in mind that public restrooms often have a louder sound when a toilet flushes. The sound may be amplified by a larger space. Some bathrooms have an automatic hand dryer which is also very loud. Another thing to be aware of, is that some public toilets flush automatically, which may catch your child off guard. You also have to be aware that other people will be flushing the toilet, washing their hands, and using the hand dryer. This creates a lot of loud and unique sounds.

If you notice that your child is sensitive to loud noises, then try using noise reduction headphones. I find it helpful to prepare my son ahead of time by telling him, “The hand dryer is going to be loud” or “This toilet will flush automatically.” I suggest using the family restroom when out in the community. It cuts down on loud noises and it maximizes your control over the situation. At school, maybe ask if your child can use a single bathroom instead of the larger restroom with several stalls.

Generalization of Skills

Even after being potty trained, a child may still struggle with generalizing this learned skill. Your child may feel that they can only use a particular bathroom at home. They may also have difficulty using the bathroom at school. Children on the spectrum often struggle to carryover what they have learned across settings. Sometimes, this is the first hurdle in getting your child to understand that they can use the potty in a different setting. To help with generalizing skills, I found it helpful to take the potty cover seat with us when we were out and had to use the public bathroom.

Conclusion

I hope these 7 tips on potty training provide you with a better understanding of your child and why it may take them a little longer to master this skill. Children with autism often have more hurdles to overcome before the toilet training process begins. Understanding how sensory processing, communication, and routine impact your child will help you better understand them. When you understand your child, then you know how to help them and what techniques to try. Most importantly, be encouraged to know that you are not alone. Your child will get there. It just takes a little extra patience and time.

How To Identify Emotions

Feelings are the emotions that we experience everyday. Many people are able to decipher emotions by looking at a persons face, reading nonverbal cues, and then determining how a person feels. However, for students on the autism spectrum, it can be challenging to recognize facial expressions. It is also difficult for them to read nonverbal cues and understand how a person is feeling.

What is Nonverbal Language?

Nonverbal language is how we communicate with others without using words. In fact, more than 70% of communication is nonverbal. Read on to find out more about nonverbal communications and tips on how to teach feelings and emotions to your students.

Nonverbal language includes:

Eye Contact-Looking someone in the eyes during a conversation.

Body Posture-The way you position your body.

Personal Space-The amount of space between you and someone else.

Gestures-Hand movements that include waving and pointing.

Facial Expressions-The expression on someone’s face that includes smiling and frowning.

Tone of Voice-The tone of someone’s voice.

5 Strategies For Teaching Nonverbal Language

RELATED: 5 Common Myths about AAC and Language Development

1. Point Out Facial Expressions

Show your students pictures of people exhibiting different facial expressions. Point out their eyes, mouth, and body language. Point out if the person is smiling, frowning, or has a neutral face. Help your students identify the emotions. For example, if a person is smiling; point out to your students that that person feels happy.

2. Use “I feel when” statements

Once a student is able to identify facial expressions, they may need help with interpreting their own emotions. Students may still have difficulty determining how their own emotions make them feel. By using their own examples, it will help increase their understanding. For example, a student can say “I feel peaceful when my mom reads my favorite book.”

3. Use Social Stories

Social stories describe social situations and teach students how to respond. It also provides guidelines of what is acceptable in each social situation. This helps to reduce anxiety and the student knows what is appropriate in that setting. It can help to have social stories for several different social settings. For example, birthday party, sporting event, or in the library.

4. Participate in Role Playing

Role playing allows you to demonstrate the different emotions with your students. You may also encourage your students to role play with each other. Provide them with different scenarios and model the appropriate social response. By practicing facial expressions in a structured environment, it will help students become more comfortable expressing themselves.

5. Practice Comprehension Skills

After students have practiced their social skills, then assess their comprehension. Encourage your students to practice identifying and understanding their emotions by answering comprehension questions. Have them match their emotions with the questions.

RELATED: Social Skills-Teaching Students How To Be Kind

RELATED: Positive Self Esteem for Children

Summary

It is important to understand how nonverbal language skills relate to emotions. Both of these skills are essential for encouraging positive interactions, increasing self esteem, and maintaining healthy relationships. By trying these tips and strategies, you will help your students learn the importance of nonverbal communication and the importance of being able to interpret the feelings of others. Also help teach perspective taking and interpersonal skills by requiring students to analyze their own emotions.

These positive self esteem ideas will help teach children about healthy esteem, improve their self awareness, and help boost their self confidence.

Challenge your kids to become self motivated and boost their self esteem by completing these activities. Motivate them with these self awareness tips and help them improve their overall self confidence.

What is self esteem?

Self esteem is when children feel confident about their abilities, feel accepted, and believe in themselves.

Low Self Esteem-When children placed little value on their opinions and ideas. They have a tendency to focus on their weaknesses.

Healthy Self Esteem-When children feel positive about themselves and are able to recognize their shortcomings.

Why does self esteem matter?

Children with self esteem feel secure. When children feel confident, they are more likely to succeed in school and maintain positive friendships. They’re also more likely to try new things and learn from their mistakes.

How Do I Build My Child’s Self Esteem?

Positive self esteem doesn’t happen over night; a child’s self esteem grows over time. As their self esteem grows, their since of security helps them deal with challenges in life.

The way that parents interact with their children sets the foundation for a child’s self esteem.

Spend time with your children-Engage in an activity that they enjoy and spend quality time. Play a game or read their favorite book.

Praise your children-Provide positive feedback when they make good choices and make progress toward their goals. Reward them with positive praise and encouragement.

Focus on their strengths-Nurture and encourage the things your children are good at. Involve them in extracurricular activities like sports, dance, or music.

Set a good example-Your children are watching you. Be a role model and set a positive example. Put effort into everyday tasks without complaining Wand your children will take note.

Validate their feelings-Let your children know that their thoughts and feelings are important. Try to see their point of view and let them know that you support them. It’s healthy for children to learn how to work through their feelings at an early age.

It’s healthy for children to learn how to work through their feelings at an early age. For more tips on teaching emotions, read my blog post on 5 Tips For Teaching Feelings and Emotions. For activities on identifying feelings, try my Feelings and Emotions Bundle.

Positive Self Esteem Activities

From my experience, most children have difficulty listing their strengths. If you ask them open ended questions, such as, “What are you good at?” or “What are your talents?” they will either respond with “I don’t know” OR use the same 1 to 2 responses for each question.

Help your students discover their talents by making a list:

Talents

Favorite school subject(s)

How I like to work

How I spend my free time

What I do well

What I’m most proud of

For additional tips and ideas, try my Super Kids Positive Self Esteem activities. They’re designed to foster and encourage self esteem for all children. Students are rewarded with self achievement certificates. They also personalize a 14 page mini book by writing about their own talents.
